Summary (Why I do)
I lead web design, development and engineering teams that build online communications and web-based software used by people. I devote time in every project to listening to the people who will use the tools we build. I believe the Web can and should make communication and collaboration easier. I enjoy finding simple solutions for difficult problems. I prefer open source technologies, and I’m particularly found of Drupal for mid-to-large-scale websites and WordPress for blogging.

Freelance/Independent Contractor – joshuami.com
Nov. 2001 – Present
I do freelance gigs for two reasons. First, it is a way to help out friends and family. I don’t take on a lot of those projects, but when I do, I like to use them to learn a new skill or enhance one I haven’t used for a while. The second type of gig I have performed is continuity. While I’m not a big proponent of working two jobs, I have been known to help a previous employer out by providing continuity and consulting to make sure my former customers do not suffer. This type of work is contingent on the approval of a new employer.
Most recently, I helped move Portland Village School move to Google Apps for Education. Project included a migration plan, mailbox migration and introductory training for faculty, staff and board members. Board members will move the storage of their collaborative documents and charter archives to Google Docs and Google Groups.Recently moved Portland Village School’s website to Drupal Gardens and updated the design. This project included the creation of custom content types and views as well as training volunteers and staff to maintain the site.
Past projects include portfolio website for friend and film producer, an informational website and membership database for the Oregon chapter of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI).
Past projects included website design for small independent technology resellers and an interactive parts and service CD-ROM manual for Wirtgen America’s line of road compaction equipment. (Hamm Division)

I have conducted faculty and staff training on the use of web maintenance and content contribution software. Additional training experience includes seminars and workshops with the goal of improving the use of the Internet for effective, learner-centered instruction.
